Recently, John and Jackie picked me up and took me out for breakfast at Delaneys Diner in Westerville.  They invited Tom as well, but he didn’t want to get up as early as we were going.  We had intended to eat at the Galena Diner, but when we got there, there was a handwritten sign saying it was closed due to a water main problem.  Instead, we headed to Delaneys Diner, which John and Jackie had heard recommended, but had never tried.

Delaneys Diner is on the far south side of Westerville, just south of I-270.  It is located in a shopping center that is undergoing some renovations.  Delaneys Diner is locally owned and has two, soon to be three, locations.  The Westerville location is the original with another in Reynoldsburg and one opening soon in Groveport.  Jeff and Lisa Miller are the owners and try to incorporate everyday favorites as well as unique offerings.  The atmosphere is retro diner with the requisite red booths and a counter with the grill behind it.

Although Delaneys Diner was busy on the day we visited, we were seated right away at one of the few open tables.  The breakfast menu is packed with the normal diner food:  pancakes, omelets, and biscuits.  They also have country fried steak and a dish called the Indy 500:  pork tenderloin, sausage gravy, biscuits, eggs, and has browns.  That would be my sodium intake for a week!

John ordered the most unique thing on the menu, a breakfast conewich.  The conewich is like a thin pancake shaped like a cone and stuffed with scrambled eggs, grilled onions, green peppers, and cheese with hash browns on the side.  I ordered blueberry pancakes and got three very large pancakes.  I also got bacon that was cooked just right, chewy and delicious.  Jackie ordered an omelet.

All of the food came quickly and was hot and delicious.  The conewich was interesting but not very practical.  John couldn’t pick it up and eat his scrambled eggs in it.  Instead, he cut off pieces of the conewich and ate them with his scrambled eggs.  I could only eat two of my pancakes so Jackie had a few bites of the third.  We all shared the bacon.

Our waitress was very good, fast and friendly.  She hit just the note of attention, keeping coffee and hot tea filled without being obtrusive.  We were all very satisfied with this delicious start to our day.

Delaneys Diner in Westerville is a good place to stop for breakfast or lunch.  I’m sure that their other locations are just as good.
