On another adventure day with Mom and Dad, we ate at Café Creekside in Gahanna, one of the eastern suburbs of Columbus. Gahanna has really developed in the last ten years, with a lot of new growth in housing and in the downtown area. I will describe some of the new developments next week.
We love to get out with Mom and Dad and explore new areas. Mom and Dad both graduated from Ohio State and spent years in the Columbus area. But that was in the 1950’s, and not much looks the same. We can drive through neighborhoods they recognized 70 years ago but they are new to them today. Tom grew up in Columbus, so he is able to do the same thing. It is fun to combine old memories with new sights. Although I was born in Columbus, I have no memory of living there, so it is all new to me!
Café Creekside is a combination of both the old and the new. It is located in an 1823 building that was a tavern built by David Pugh along Big Walnut Creek. The café itself, however, opened in 2007 and is family owned and operated. On the walls inside are lots of pictures donated by the Gahanna historical society.
The menu is also a mix of old and new. You can get breakfast or lunch items. There is a fried bologna sandwich with a slab of bologna an inch thick. Creamed chipped beef is another popular menu item. There are also modern burgers and chicken and waffles.
Although the breakfast items looked delicious, all of us opted for lunch items. Tom got a mushroom swiss burger with fries. I ordered grilled cheese with coleslaw. Mom and Dad decided to share a bacon burger with waffle fries. The prices were very reasonable. Each of our sandwiches with sides was less than $10, a bargain in the Columbus area. All of the sandwiches were very good. We were eyeing the dessert menu but decided to head on down the road and have dessert later.
We really liked the atmosphere of Café Creekside. It had that old downtown diner feel but the food was fresh and the service was good. The café was full, but there wasn’t a line. The café is open Tuesday through Sunday from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. and has creekside seating when the weather is warm enough. There is parking behind the café. We would be glad to eat there again when we are in Gahanna.
