Darin and Brooke Aldridge were scheduled to play a concert during the anniversary weekend here at Kings Mountain. But when Hurricane Matthew came through and brought all the rain, the concert was rescheduled. So, a couple of weeks ago, on a cool Saturday evening, Tom and I got to go to our third bluegrass concert in the last six months.
Darin and Brooke Aldridge are a married couple from North Carolina. They are a popular draw in this part of the world but are also building a following in Nashville and on the Bluegrass circuit. They appeared at the grand opening of the Earl Scruggs Center in Shelby, North Carolina. They recently appeared as an opening act for Vince Gill. They even have a concert coming up in Wilmington, Ohio, on November 12.
Brooke is the lead singer and had a beautiful voice. Darin plays several instruments but spends most of his time playing guitar. They are backed up by a band composed of four members who also provide backup vocals. They sing a variety of original music, gospel, and traditional bluegrass. Their recording of “Tennessee Flat Top Box” recently reached #1 on the bluegrass chart.
The concert began at 5 p.m. in the park’s outside amphitheater. Although we can seat 500 in the amphitheater, there were only about 100 in attendance. Some of them came prepared for the cool evening – plenty of winter coats, hats, and mittens. Others, who had decided to stay on the spur of the moment, left early when they got cold.
It was a good concert. I enjoyed the music and the audience was very appreciative. I especially enjoyed a couple of their gospel pieces: “He’s Already There” and “Every Scar.” If you have a chance to go hear Darin and Brooke Aldridge, take it!
