Another restaurant Tom and I enjoy on San Juan Island is Herbs Tavern. It is a pool hall and bar, so not our usual choice for dinner out. But we have been there twice and enjoyed good meals both times.
The first time we went to Herbs Tavern was with Sandy and Eric back in May. Then we went again for Tom’s birthday in June with the other volunteers in the park. Herbs is known for its Fish and Chips. Supposedly it has the best on the island. I am not a Fish and Chips connoisseur, but I had an excellent salad. Those who have tried the Fish and Chips say that it is excellent: the beer batter on the fish is light and crunchy and the fish is fresh.
Herbs is 1/3 restaurant, 1/3 pool hall, and 1/3 bar. They have live music on the weekends but we have not been there for that. Herbs Tavern is not a fancy place. We went on a weeknight and were served by the person who is also the bartender. The second time we went they were out of several dishes, but there was still plenty to chose from. The menu is basic and the prices are some of the more reasonable at restaurants in Friday Harbor.
I have tried the House Salad and the Cowboy Burger. I got tater tots with the burger. The salad was very good – fresh with a good dressing. The burger was also good and I liked the tater tots, although I’m sure they were frozen. Tom has had Herb’s Cheeseburger with bacon and the grilled chicken. He said both were good.
Both times we were at Herbs Tavern, we especially enjoyed our servers. They were efficient and friendly, and both of them took pictures of our group.
I’ve read that Herbs Tavern also serves breakfast. It seems like an unlikely place to have breakfast, but we might have to check it out before we leave the island.
