In December, Tom and I went to Schmidts Fudge Haus in Columbus. It was the fifth stop for us on the Buckeye Treat Trail. Stopping by Schmidts Fudge Haus was part of an adventure afternoon in German Village with Marta and Deloe Mathatas.
We met Marta and Deloe at Schmidt’s Sausage Haus, which is in sight of Schmidts Fudge Haus. We ate there with them two years ago and liked it so much we decided to go again. Since we last saw them, Deloe had treatment for esophageal cancer and Marta had two serious illnesses. They are both battling back, but they have been through some tough times. So we had plenty of catching up to do. They also went to Sweden during the summer and we compared notes.
The food at Schmidt’s Sausage Haus is authentically German, which means it is really good if you like sausage, cabbage, and potatoes. We all found something on the menu to enjoy. Technically, Schmidt’s Sausage Haus was the fourth stop on the Buckeye Treat Trail. Even though we went there for lunch, they have a Buckeye Cream Puff on their dessert menu that is listed on the Buckeye Treat Trail.
Tom and I decided to split the Buckeye Cream Puff for dessert. The cream puff was filled with a velvety peanut butter cream that was delicately flavored – just a hint of peanut butter. The puff had a layer of thick chocolate fudge sauce on the top with a sprinkle of peanuts. Cream puffs aren’t usually my thing for dessert, but this one was very good and very large. We could have split it four ways and been satisfied.
After our filling lunch, we headed over to one of our favorite place, The Book Loft. If you love bookstores, this is the place in Ohio you want to go. In fact, The Book Loft is second only to Powell’s Books in my opinion. I just wish they had used books on their shelves as well as new, but then they would need an even bigger bookstore! Deloe had a big pile of books but he put most of them back. We all found something we couldn’t life without.
Marta and Deloe headed back to Wooster after our time at the The Book Loft, which is when Tom and I walked back to Schmidts Fudge Haus. Schmidts Fudge Haus is just a little shop but it is packed with homemade treats and chocolates. It smelled like chocolate as soon as we walked in the door. And these are handmade, not machine made. We bought some buckeyes and a couple of other treats.
The buckeyes were hand-rolled and dipped. You could still see the hole where the dipping prong was inserted. People who are buckeye snobs will tell you there shouldn’t be a hole, but it looks more authentically handmade that way. These were the best buckeyes I have ever bought in a shop. They are best when fresh so Tom and I bought a box of 15 and gave some to Mom and Dad and some to John and Jackie.
Tom and I love to go to German Village and explore the shops and quaint streets. We usually go in December and enjoy the tasteful Christmas decorations. Schmidts Fudge Haus gives us one more great excuse to venture downtown.
