People keep asking how Tom and I like living in our RV. We have now been here for a month and we love it. Yes, it is a small space, but we like being together and there is plenty of room to spread out when we need to. The other day when I was writing my sermon, Tom had to be on the phone for a couple of hours. He went to the desk in the bedroom while I got the desk in the living room, and I couldn’t hear him at all.
We have everything we need in the RV. One bathroom with a small sink and vanity but a big medicine cabinet. One kitchen with plenty of storage. One couch and two recliners so we can cuddle or have our own space. Two desks and a table so there are options if we are both working. One bedroom but a pull-out sleeper sofa so we can even put guests up overnight.
We had owned a house for so long we forgot how nice it is not to pay utilities or property taxes. When I have free time I don’t have to spend it working on the yard. Our old house was on one acre, and there was always a flower bed that needed weeding. And we had an in-ground pool that required a lot of work when it was first opened in the summer. We are not missing any of that right now. We take walks, go shopping together, and sit and read when we are not working. Today we cleaned the RV (swept, dusted, mopped, cleaned the bathroom and kitchen) and it took 20 minutes with both of us working on it.
There are adjustments to living in a small space. It is more important to put things away instead of leaving them sitting out or lying around. But I think the biggest things are respecting each other and treating each other with patience and kindness – something that should be easy for every married couple!
