We recently tried out a new restaurant – Uniontown Brewing Company in Ashland, Ohio. I hadn’t seen my friend Chris Ferlinc for more than 18 months, so we were determined to get together during my short sojourn in Ohio. Chris has very busy weekends off but she also had one Friday off in March. That was when it would have to be. We agreed to meet in Ashland and picked the Uniontown Brewing Company for lunch.
As I mentioned earlier this week, I had not been to downtown Ashland in years. Going to the Uniontown Brewing Company was a good excuse to check it out. Downtown Ashland has a handful of unique restaurants and this one got good reviews on TripAdvisor. It was easy to find free parking. Even the parallel parking spaces along the main drag don’t have parking meters. I always appreciate free parking. Tom and I drove around the block and picked a parking lot a couple of blocks from our destination.
When we arrived at the restaurant we were seated immediately at a very nice table beside the large front windows. The restaurant was busy but didn’t have a line. Uniontown Brewing Company is in the former Gilbert Furniture Company building and had a definite warehouse feel. The building itself was built in the 1850 and needed extensive renovations to bring it up to code. The owners, Doug and Anna Reynolds, did a lot of the renovation work themselves and made sure they kept the historic touches, such as a pressed metal ceiling.
The restaurant is called Uniontown Brewing Company because Uniontown was the original name of Ashland. When the town applied for a post office in 1822, it was informed that Uniontown was taken and it would have to change its name. Because the Uniontown Brewing Company is tied to the history of the town, the original name seemed appropriate. The restaurant and brewery opened in 2017.
The menu is American pub food. There is a good selection of sandwiches. I ordered the fried cheese curds as an appetizer for all of us to share and they were delicious. The cheese curds were lightly battered, perfectly fried, and set off with a dill sauce. They were so good that I forgot to take a picture of them until they were almost gone.
Tom and Chris both ordered sliders. You can mix and match the sliders which meant the two of them got four different sliders. Bill ordered a hamburger and I got chicken pot pie. Although I love chicken pot pie it usually has too much fat and salt to fit in my diet. But it sounded so good that I couldn’t resist.
The food came fresh and hot. The pot pie was as wonderful as the cheese curds. The crust was flaky and crisp but not hard. The vegetables and chicken filling was delicious as well. Everyone else said their food was very good and most of us cleaned our plates.
The food was perfect and the company made it even better. But the best part of the meal was the giant Uniontown Brewing Company chair outside the restaurant. We all had to get our picture taken in it. Chris jumped up on the edge and slid to the back of the chair. I was going to perch on the edge but Chris and Tom said I had to slide in too. So I leaned back and slid back very quickly. Then Tom had to help me out. Well, he didn’t have to help me – I could have gotten out on my own – but it was more fun to have him help me.
Uniontown Brewing Company is a fun and interesting place to eat. The food is excellent and reasonably priced. The restaurant is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. with later hours on Friday and Saturday. If you are in downtown Ashland, I recommend you check this place out. And send me a picture of you in the giant chair!
