Southern Soul BBQ on St. Simons Island

As you know, if you have been reading my blog for any time at all, Tom and I love to check out BBQ restaurants.  Tom will eat pulled pork from anywhere and we have had some great sandwiches over the years.  So it was inevitable that we would eat at Southern Soul BBQ here on St. Simons Island.

Southern Soul BBQ is the only BBQ place on the island.  Most of the restaurants here specialize in seafood (go figure).  Southern Soul is also the hardest restaurant to get to on the island.  Not because it is out of the way, but because it is in the most visible spot.  Located on the large and very busy roundabout on the southern end of the island, the small parking lot is always packed.  In fact, the only time we haven’t seen it FULL was a couple of days ago at 4 p.m. in the afternoon.

Southern Soul BBQ has interior and exterior seating and carryout.  Their menu isn’t fancy, although the sandwich names are creative.  There are also some unusual items on the menu, such as fried oreos.  There is a lunchtime special – a basic pulled pork sandwich with fries and a drink – for $7.  Each day has specials that are not available on other days of the week.

Tom ordered the usual pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw on top with fries and a drink.  I ordered a chicken salad sandwich (some days I just don’t feel like eating pulled pork) with hush puppies and tea.  Although I love southern sweet tea, I always get a half-and-half (half sweet, half unsweet) because the sweet is too sweet.  The food was good and plentiful.  I could only eat half my sandwich.  The hush puppies had peppers in them and were a little too spicy for me, although Tom liked them.

One of the fun things about Southern Soul BBQ is the shared tables.  There isn’t much seating space outside (and less inside), so you sit at long picnic tables with other people.

Southern Living Magazine named Southern Soul BBQ “the south’s best BBQ” in 2017.  The restaurant has also been featured on TLC’s BBQ Pitmasters.  If you want old-fashioned southern style BBQ on St. Simons Island, the only place to go is Southern Soul.
