Before going to the Armstrong Air and Space Museum, Tom and I recharged by eating at Al’s Woody’s Diner in Wapakoneta. We love a good diner, especially one that has lots of local support and this looked like the place. There were pickup trucks in the parking lot and tables filled with workers on their lunch break.
Al’s Woody’s Diner is an Ohio State backer place on the edge of Wapakoneta. The Woody in the name refers to Woody Hayes, the historic Ohio State Coach. The decor is all Ohio State, mostly Ohio State football. There was even a Buckeye gumball machine! Lots of memorabilia and pictures hung on the walls. Because it is a requirement to be an Ohio State fan if you live in central Ohio, we felt right at home.
When we entered, there wasn’t a clean table although several tables were empty. We waited until a waitress found time to clean one off and then sat down. Al’s Woody’s Diner offers an extensive menu with their burgers and pizza rating high in reviews. I asked the waitress what she recommended. She rolled her eyes and said that everything was good. Subject closed.
After studying the menu for a while, I ordered a patty melt and Tom got a chicken salad wrap. One thing that was interesting was the sides. You could get fries and coleslaw for a $7.95 upcharge. That seemed a little steep. The sandwiches we ordered were already $15 each. We ordered one fries and coleslaw to share.
Our waitress was a woman of few words. She didn’t interact with anyone there. Maybe she was tired or maybe she just didn’t like us. When she brought our food, she set it down as fast as she could and left immediately. She didn’t come back until she brought the bill. We asked for a to-go container and had to wait 10 minutes for her to bring it. I was heading up to the counter to ask for it again and she said she would bring it when she had time. Tom didn’t think I should leave our standard 20% tip when she was so rude. She didn’t refill our drinks or ask if we wanted dessert.
That being said, the food was very good. The patty melt was large, hot and delicious. Tom forgot to order his wrap without tomatoes and they were all through the sandwich. So he shared my melt and there was plenty for both of us. The coleslaw didn’t look like much but it ended up being very good. I like tomatoes and was happy to eat the chicken salad wrap for two meals at home. Yummy!
I would eat at Al’s Woody’s Diner again, despite our bad waitress. From what I have read, the servers are usually very friendly. The atmosphere was fun and the food was very good.
