As part of our fall to-do list, Tom and I decided to plant a couple more trees in our yard. Columbus Trees was the company we decided to have help us with this goal. We have 1.5 acres of land with a line of pine trees between us and US 3. The line of pines helps to cut down the traffic noise, but our neighbor has an opening in his backyard that lets a lot of the traffic noise get through. The opening has to be there because he has a billboard sign in his backyard.
Tom is more concerned about sight lines than he is about noise lines. We live next to US 3. We are going to get traffic noise. But he doesn’t like people being able to see our house and RV through the gap in the trees. He also doesn’t like people further down our street being able to look into the garage when it is open. He wanted trees to block both of these sight lines. I don’t care about the sight lines, but I like trees and am always happy to have a few more.
We looked online for a good tree company and found Columbus Trees, just north of Sunbury. They got very good reviews online and we liked that their price included installation and warranty. This is the price of this tree in your yard. Period. We drove by it on one of our visits to Mom and Dad and then stopped by a few days later.
One of the employees, Mike, greeted us and offered to help us find what we needed. We already knew exactly what kind of tree we needed. Mike loaded us up in an ATV and we headed out to find our trees. Columbus Trees has a huge assortment of trees and I was glad (pre-surgery) to have him drive us through the different tree areas.
We rode to the Norway Spruce section and Mike pointed out some differences in trees. He had a notebook with the price of each tree. When Tom and I picked one, Mike wrote our name on a tag and had us affix it to the tree. Then we headed off to the White Pine section. There we repeated the process. We selected two 9″ trees so they are good sized already. On the way through the complex, Mike pointed out other kinds of trees that are often planted now in Ohio. Columbus Trees only stocks non-invasive kinds of trees.
When we got back to the office, Mike went over the planting and care of the trees. He said he would text us when they were coming out to plant the trees. Columbus Trees also took care of calling 811 to have our utilities marked. Better safe than sorry. We got the extended warranty, which includes annual deep feeding for the first three years.

Before Columbus Trees came out with our trees, Tom had to take out the grapevine that was where we wanted to plant the white pine. The grapevine has been there as long as the house. We have never gotten any grapes off it – the birds and animals get to them before us. It looked like a piece of the jungle in our back yard. Tom worked hard and dug it out, along with several little trees that were growing under it.

The trees were planted Monday, October 6, and look great. We have done the deep watering twice now and expect the trees to thrive in their new locations. Columbus Trees made the whole process easy and stress-free. We will definitely turn to them the next time we want to plant a tree.
I love spruce trees. Growing up in South Arkansas we had mostly pine trees (don’t know the variety — tall and would snap in ice) and few cedar trees. My brother and I own an 80 acre tree farm and it is planted with pines.
I always heard southerners say that their retirement money was in their patch of pine trees. Is that still true? I know you are more diversified, but you still have the patch of pine!
