Tomatillos Authentic Mexican Restaurant

Tom and I recently ate at Tomatillos Authentic Mexican Restaurant with John and Jackie.  We are always up for trying a new place to eat and we have been on a Mexican streak lately.  After years of avoiding Mexican restaurants because we didn’t know what to order, we are experimenting more.

Tomatillos Authentic Mexican Restaurant is located just down the road from John and Jackie.  It is conveniently located just north of I-270 on 315 in a line of restaurants and shops.  I couldn’t find any history on the restaurant or how long it has been in its present location.  The name comes from the Mexican husk tomato, a staple in Mexican food.

Tom and I arrived a few minutes before John and Jackie and had our choice of seating.  There was one rowdy bunch at the bar, but other than that, the restaurant was empty.  Only a few other people came in while we were eating.  The menu is extensive, so I asked our waiter what he recommended.  He said that everything is good.

Stuffed pineapple

After a bit of deliberation, I ordered the Stuffed Pineapple, a new item on the menu.  Tom got the Pollo Loco:  chicken topped with grilled onions, mushrooms, and mozzarella & cheddar cheese.  John got the Pollo Senior and Jackie ordered the Sopa Azteca:  shredded chicken with rice, cilantro, onion, tomato, and avocado strip.

Pollo Loco

The food was not served all at once.  I got mine, and then Tom’s came, and five minutes later John and Jackie got their foods.  My stuffed pineapple was very good.  It was half a pineapple, grilled and then stuffed with pulled pork, grilled onions, mushrooms, peppers, tomatoes and topped with mozzarella and cheddar cheese.  The combination was delicious.  Everyone else enjoyed their food as well.

Sopa Azteca

I really enjoyed my food, but noticed later that it was very high in sodium.  This isn’t something I notice while I am eating it.  Salt makes everything taste better.  Because I follow a low-sodium diet, however, I notice it later when I am thirsty, my tongue is swollen, my blood pressure goes up, and I don’t have to go to the bathroom.  In fact, the meal was so high in sodium that I probably shouldn’t eat there again.  While I enjoyed my food, the after-effects were not pleasant.

If you like good Mexican food, and aren’t on a low-sodium diet, then I highly recommend Tomatillos Authentic Mexican Restaurant.
