Sometimes things break and we have to fix them. We have to take the car in to be repaired. We call a plumber. to fix a leaky pipe. A marriage is broken when one spouse gets a wandering eye. Sometimes our faith breaks. How do we fix it? By keeping our eyes fixed on God.
Have you considered the two ways we use the word “fix”? The online dictionary gives us two definitions for the verb “fix.” The first definition is “to fasten securely, to repair.” The second definition is “to decide or settle on.” So we can fasten our faith securely to God by deciding to follow God. Keeping our eyes fixed on God.
There are several wonderful Bible verses that support this idea.
But my eyes are fixed on you, Sovereign Lord; in you I take refuge. Psalm 141:8
Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Isaiah 26:3
Let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:1b-2
And, because I love hymns and praise songs, these verses always call to mind the wonderful hymn, “Turn your eyes upon Jesus.”
O soul, are you weary and troubled? No light in the darkness you see?
There’s light for a look at the Savior and life more abundant and free.
Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in his wonderful face
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of his glory and grace.
So, if your faith is broken, or even a little wobbly, fix your eyes on Jesus. With our eyes fixed on Jesus, we find a place of refuge and peace. With our eyes fixed on Jesus, we finish the tasks set before us.
