Falls Market Restaurant in Ohiopyle, PA

One of the first things we need to do when we move to a new place is start checking out restaurants.  I ask all the rangers for their favorites in the area and get some good recommendations.  Then, when Tom and I are exploring, we stop by about one per week to try.  The first restaurant we tried in Pennsylvania was Falls Market Restaurant in Ohiopyle.

Ohiopyle is set up for tourists.  Although it is just a little burg, it has about 10 restaurants, two bike rental shops, and five whitewater rafting outfitters.  There are also two general stores to cater to the people camping at the state park.  Tom and I had a coupon for a sandwich shop and bakery so we checked it out first.  But we weren’t impressed with the sandwich selection.  I did get a blueberry muffin with white chocolate chips that turned out to be very good (I had that for supper).

So we walked through town, checking out all the restaurants that were open.  Even though it was after Memorial Day, the tourist season doesn’t really begin until about June 15.  Most of the restaurants open sometime around the middle of June.

But the Falls Market was a hive of activity.  There was an outside sandwich shop that looked pretty good, but you had to eat outside and it was a little cool for that.  They had a general store with various food items and a small stock of things tourists need.  In that part of the store was a deli that also sold pizza.  After looking around, Tom and I decided to eat at the Falls Market Restaurant which was half of the general store building.

The setting for Falls Market Restaurant is plain but the menu isn’t.  The menu has a wide selection of food from sandwiches to salads to pasta.  Tom and I both ordered the swiss mushroom burger and it was very good.  It wasn’t the best burger ever, but we enjoyed it after our morning hikes.  The fries were fresh and hot.  After my burger I got an ice cream cone – mountainberry cheesecake – and I enjoyed that as much as the burger.  We looked at the fudge and cookies but they looked stale so we skipped those.

The clientele at Falls Market Restaurant is a relaxed mix of tourists and locals.  The men who were working on the road came in for lunch as well as people passing by on the bike trail.  The food is good and the service is fast.  Tom and I would definitely enjoy eating here again.
