When we were with Mom in July, we ate at the Reindeer Grill in downtown Mansfield. I am always looking for new places to try with Mom and she had never even heard of it. But it got really good ratings online and had an extensive menu, so we decided to try it.
Reindeer Grill opened in downtown in 2018 in one of the old storefronts. Ralph and Lisa Powell, restauranteurs from Maryland, decided to move to Mansfield to be closer to family. They were also able to afford a bigger restaurant in Mansfield than they could in Maryland. Because of that Maryland connection, the restaurant serves some seafood offerings that are unusual to find in Ohio, such as crabcakes.
The unusual name comes from Lisa’s family history. Lisa’s great-grandparents owned Reindeer Custard in Silver Springs, Maryland in the 1950’s.
The Reindeer Grill has that perfect Mom and Pop ambience. In other words, it doesn’t look like much from the outside. Inside we read a sign that invited us to seat ourselves. Menus were already on the table. When our waitress arrived, I asked what she recommended. Several things on the menu are designated with little reindeer heads that show restaurant specialties. Our waitress said that the lasagna is a favorite.
I had been thinking about ordering the double BLT so I asked about the lettuce. The waitress said it came shredded in bags and she didn’t know the source. After hearing this, Mom and I ordered the lasagna. We had a choice of small – two layers – or large – three layers. We both got the small. Tom ordered a chicken wrap. While we waited for our entrees, we enjoyed the complimentary garlic knots.
Our food was very good when it came. The lasagna was hot and fresh. The two layers of the small lasagna were grilled with the cheese just a little crunchy at the edges. Delicious! Tom also really enjoyed his chicken wrap, although there was enough for two meals. The fries and the garlic knots were very good as well. Tom and Mom both took home about half of their meals.
We really enjoyed our meals. The restaurant was busy without being packed and it was easy to find free parking out front on the Square. Mom said she would have to come back with some of her friends. I think she should come back with us, next time we are in town. That double BLT is still calling my name.
