The Whitney House in Worthington, Ohio

On one of the few wintery evenings in December, Tom and I met John and Jackie at The Whitney House in Worthington for supper.  Although John and Jackie have eaten there several times, it was a first visit for Tom and I.  John made reservations, which was a good thing because the restaurant was very busy.

The Whitney House opened in 2014 in the historic and bustling downtown Worthington.  The owners wanted to pay homage to the homes and kitchens of our past. Kitchens that treated friends like family, welcoming all to enjoy delicious food and crafted drinks made with love.  They want patrons to feel like they are eating a Sunday dinners with family and friends piled into the dining room to catch up and enjoy a home-cooked meal together.  The restaurant serves “thoughtfully crafted American comfort food.”  They use fresh and local ingredients.

The restaurant was crowded with tables close together.  We sat in a booth in the bar section which was lively for a Thursday night.  Our waiter was attentive but very busy and it took him a while to take our order.  Tom and I both ordered burgers.  Tom got the Whitney House Burger and I got the Tavern Stack Burger.  John ordered the Blackened Chicken Sandwich and Jackie got a Seasonal House Salad with a side of Truffle and Fontina Cheese Pierogis.

While we waited for our food we talked with each other but it was very noisy in the restaurant.  There were several times I had to lean forward to hear what they were saying.

When the food arrived, it was delicious.  I especially liked the tomato jam on my burger.  The fries were served with fry sauce and I had to ask for ketchup.  We all tried a bit of pierogi.  We ordered one piece of Grown Up Chocolate Cake to share.  It was good but nothing special.  Once piece was plenty for the four of us.

We really enjoyed The Whitney House but probably won’t eat there again.  Although the food was delicious, it was also very high in sodium.  The burgers had lots of salt and the fries were covered with it.  They are obviously not watching the sodium content of their comfort food.

Despite the high sodium levels, we enjoyed our meal very much.  After all, any meal with John and Jackie is a good one.
