Last week we enjoyed a visit from our friends Bill and Barbara Ruh. I have mentioned Bill and Barbara before. We visited them when we were in Massachusetts back in 2015.
Bill and Barbara have had an interesting journey in the last year. They are unintentional full-time RVers. Once both daughters were off to school, the Ruhs intended to downsize and move into a smaller house. Last May a person came to their door and offered to buy their house for a good price. They decided to sell and started looking for a one-story home. Unfortunately they couldn’t find anything that they liked at a reasonable price. So they decided to put most of their belongings in storage and live in their 19 foot Escape RV trailer until they could find something they liked.
Ten months later, they are still living in their Escape trailer. Their real estate agent in Massachusetts continues to look for a house for them. In the meantime, they are traveling and enjoying exploring the United States. They spent most of the winter in Florida with Barbara’s dad and brother. They stopped by St. Simons on their meandering way north.
Bill and Barbara stayed at Blythe Island Regional Park Campground, just on the other side of Brunswick. They took a day to explore Jekyll Island, then came over to Fort Frederica on Saturday to see us work. We were doing our usual Saturday Living History thing and they blended in with the other visitors doing the park. At the end of the day, they helped us clean up and put stuff away, then we headed off for supper.
We had supper the first night at Certified Burgers (review coming) which has become our favorite place to eat on St. Simons. After a leisurely supper and some good catching up time, they headed home for the night.
On Sunday they met us at church. We enjoyed worshiping with them. They are used to a more contemporary service but appreciated the beautiful music and good sermon. After church we went to Barbara Jean’s for lunch. We thought it was an appropriate place to take them – Barbara says her father calls her Barbara Jean. We walked around the cute little shops downtown. Then we got a call from Nell at the Visitors Center saying she was taking one of the rangers in to the emergency room. Tom agreed to go in to work for a while so we headed back to the RV.
Wesley UMC had a concert on Sunday afternoon (more about that in a future post). Bill, Barbara and I headed to the concert while Tom went to work. After the concert we visited some more and took a walk. Finally, we reluctantly said goodbye until the next time.
The two days Bill and Barbara were here were beautiful. The weather was absolutely perfect and the island was looking its best. We really enjoyed seeing our friends and catching up with their travels. We hope to see them again soon on down the road.
