Sames and Cook in Mt. Gilead

Tom and I resumed adventure days with Mom with lunch at Sames and Cook in Mt. Gilead.  We picked up two friends of Mom’s, Bonnie and Beverly, and had a wonderful afternoon out exploring.  Although we have looked at places to eat in Mt. Gilead several times, we had overlooked Sames and Cook.  Bonnie, who attends church in Mt. Gilead, suggested it as our lunch spot.

Sames and Cook doesn’t look like much from the outside.  It is in an old storefront on the historic Main Street, just south of the square.  The building was originally a hardware store with the same name, opened in 1880.  The interior of the building is much as it was during its hardware days, which gives it a rustic charm.  There are several gift areas, a bakery case, and tables nicely spaced for eating.

Karen McClelland opened Sames and Cook in 2005.  It was originally supposed to be an antiques shop, but her husband encouraged her to expand beyond antiques.  Most of the furnishings and decor in the shop are for sale, but the real draw comes from the food and coffee.  I am not a coffee drinker, but a lot of people rave about the fresh-roasted coffee at Sames and Cook.

The menu features fresh made breakfast foods and sandwiches.  All the sandwiches are served with chips and a pickle, although you can order other sides.  Breakfast foods are served all day and feature quiches, souffles, and waffles.  I had a hard time deciding between breakfast or a sandwich, but ended up ordering a grilled ham and cheese sandwich.  Tom ordered a panini.  Mom and Beverly both got the chicken salad croissant.  Bonnie ordered a BLT.

All of our sandwiches were very good and were right-sized.  Mom and Beverly especially liked their croissants.  The sandwiches filled us up just right.  I probably ate too many potato chips, but it is easy to keep nibbling when you are enjoying the company.  When we finished eating, we went up to the old-fashioned counter, told them what we ordered, and paid.

Tom and I really enjoyed eating at Sames and Cook.  We are already looking forward to a return trip to try something else on the menu.  If you are in Mt. Gilead, it is a great place to stop.
